Raine Cullen was born in Inverness in the Scottish Highlands in 1962. She has had a passion for painting and drawing since childhood. Although she has had no formal education at art-school she trained in finished art and went on to work in Interior Décor-Design before giving up work in 2002 to bring up her daughter Annie. She is a member of the Art Society of Inverness and displays her work locally. After having a break, Raine has recently returned to her love of painting and though painting people is her first love, she is venturing into the landscape and seascape scene and is exploring the Scottish Highlands and rugged coastlines in search of new subjects.
When painting portraits Raine likes to work predominantly with oil paints as she finds them most versatile for blending skin tones and being slow-drying they are great for re-touching. Facial expressions are very important to her as they can be interpreted in so many ways by individuals. She is continually seeking out elderly people with wrinkly, weathered and fascinating faces to portray their stories on canvass.
Her seascapes and landscapes very much reflect the Scottish weather and she likes to incorporate all the hues and changing light sequences by using vibrant, bold colours.

“The sea inspires me the most – it changes with every waking
moment, with every passing cloud, with every breath of
wind and ray of sunshine, it excites me and calms me”.
